Same day, same hemisphere - different fortunes:

German news site golem.de reports Navigon MobileNavigator 2.5 for Android is ready for sale at the Android Market (can't find it though). Until May 2 a 30-day-trial for DACH is €50, Europe bites €75.

As free Google Maps Navigation destroyed TomTom and Garmin share prices (yet unclear if and when it will be offered in EMEA), and past the introduction of free turn-by-turn navigation to Nokia's Ovi Maps (yet for only a small share of current phones) - Vodafone's Wayfinder is the first prominent victim:

"We could not charge for something that others gave away for free."

A couple of days behind - yet newsworthy:

ESRI announced to work with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as an AWS Independent Software Vendor (ISV). Practically, an ArcGIS Server is hosted as an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) will be available with an upcoming ArcGIS Server 10 release later in 2010. As a current customer, you obviously need to have an Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) with ESRI and an independent account on AWS to use AMIs and transfer an existing licencing scheme.

Though this rollout still is way before puberty, it clearly marks a shift away from conventional "my-LAN-is-my-castle"-setups.

The AMI isn’t anything special, just a Windows Server AMI with ArcGIS Server at this point.

Ol' James might be a little biased as WeoGeo yet is some small steps further into the cloud thing, already scaling services and starting to leverage the cloud potential.

Walk & Ride Köln, Stuttgart und Frankfurt sind im Appstore:

Nach den gestrigen updates für Walk & Ride München und Hamburg ist nun auch Walk & Ride Frankfurt in der aktuellen Softwareversion 1.3 in den Appstore eingereicht.

Wenn der review durch Apple wieder so flott geschieht wie bisher, dann gilt auch in Frankfurt "ich hab das Haus nicht gefunden" nicht mehr als Ausrede fürs zu spät kommen - zumindest für die Besitzer eines iPod touch oder iPhone.

Frankfurt und Stuttgart sind im Feinschliff - wenigstens eine Submission kommt noch in dieser Woche.

Der hochdetaillierte Stadtplan Walk & Ride 1.2 für München hilft dabei, die Bayern-Hauptstadt zu erkunden - zu Fuß, mit Tram- U- und S-Bahn oder mit dem Auto. Sicherheitshalber berechnet die App für das iPhone oder den iPod touch gleich drei Routen auf einmal. Die Navigation funktioniert auch ohne GPS und führt über viele Strassen und Schleichwege sicher zum Ziel. Weitere Stadtplan-Extras machen den Ausflug in die bajuwarische Metropole zu einem Erlebnis, bei dem die Orientierung nicht verloren geht.

United Maps GmbH holt die Metropolen Deutschlands direkt ins iPhone und sogar in den iPod touch. Walk & Ride startete mit Hamburg an der Reihe, mit München kommt die zweite Stadt der Produktlinie in den AppStore. Weitere Städte wie Berlin, Köln, Frankfurt und Stuttgart folgen in den nächsten Wochen.

Walk & Ride 1.2 München kann GPS nutzen, ist aber dazu in der Lage, auf dem iPod touch durch einfache Eingabe des Standorts Straße/Ecke oder noch einfacher über Berührung eines beliebigen Punktes den aktuellen Standort zu bestimmen. Anschließend wird über die gleichen Optionen ein Ziel gewählt und die zeitoptimierte Route berechnet.

Eine Besonderheit: Die Route wird gleichzeitig fürs Auto, für Fußgänger, Radfahrer und für den derzeit noch schienenbasierten öffentlichen Nahverkehr berechnet. Alle drei Routen werden gleichzeitig und mit Streckenlängen und geschätzter Reisedauer in den Stadtplan eingezeichnet.

While we speak, a major update to 1.2 is underway to be submitted adding further Walk & Ride destinations for München (Munich), Berlin, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Köln (Cologne).

Techcrunch rings the bell:

"Nokia says the new version of Ovi Maps that includes free walk and drive navigation has been downloaded over 1.4 million times since its introduction on 21 January 2010."

You see Hamburg city center, around Hauptbahnhof (main station). You'd expect a pretty complete map there - no outskirts, no obscure small village, downtown Hamburg.

BTW: we also rely on Navteq streetmaps - just adding some secret sauce to make the map what it should be on mobile devices: useful and relevant for pedestrians.

The numbers are impressive and so is the good news: people love maps.

Microsoft Live Labs has an ambitious project called "Pivot". The goal is to interact with massive amounts of data in new ways, using different metaphors and approaches.

"At the heart of Pivot are "Collections." They combine large groups of similar items on the Internet, so we can begin viewing the relationships between individual pieces of information in a new way. By visualizing hidden patterns, Pivot enables users to discover new insights while interacting with thousands of things at once."
